Things Learned in a Song: Tracks in the Snow by The Civil Wars

Okay... I like this song. 'Tracks in the Snow' by the Civil Wars. When you listen to it, pay attention to the fresh way they describe a familiar scene. Even if you listened to this with your eyes closed... in fact, try that first.

Isn't that vivid? And they don't use too many words. It's a song, after all, and you only have so many words in a song. Of course, they have the music to help them set the mood and pacing, but I think the lyrics alone, printed on a page, would be beautiful.

I think we'd all like to describe things this way in our own writing - concise, vivid, simple. Every word fitting perfectly, like a well-done song.

What do you think?
